McBeth Recreation Center offers opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities to participate in sports with their peers. The track team works out weekly and does local races throughout the year. The team has been working together since spring of 2001, and has grown in size and become a social and fitness oriented competitive group.
The crew is made up of athletes of varying abilities and dedication. Some athletes use wheelchairs only when participating in sports to increase their level of competitiveness. Guides are available to assist when needed in the hilly street races of Austin. The teaming of wheelchair users and able-bodied runners has created an inclusive group that helps provide community awareness, strong friendships and increased health and wellness for all involved. Some of the races team members have done are the Motorola Marathon, Cap 10, Chuy's Run and Schlotzsky's BunRun.
McBeth also conducts a weekly wheelchair tennis practice in the spring. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome to join this beginner skills program. Tennis is an excellent sport that can be played with siblings, friends and spouses with only minor modifications. The annual Up/Down Tennis Challenge is a great opportunity for able bodied players to team up with wheelchair athletes in a doubles tournament that is fun for all.
Team members use everyday chairs, court chairs, hand cycles and track chairs. BlazeSports Austin is part of a national grass roots program that helps provide more opportunities in disabled sports. Contact McBeth today to join this exciting and healthy opportunity.
