The City of Austin (COA) and the Parks
and Recreation Department (PARD)
recognizes the importance and need
for community gardens on public land.
Such gardens provide an opportunity
for individuals and families to cultivate
personal sustainability, cultivate healthy
foods and creating opportunities for
community bonding through a common
interest. The gardens also provide
a unique sustainable biodiversity
wildlife habitat for local species, such
as songbirds, butterflies and other
pollinators; which also demonstrate
how native plants support and feed our
various native wildlife species.
PARD may provide use of parkland for a community garden,
however, it is up to the community to create, cultivate and
manage the garden.
The intent of the packet is to continue equal
opportunity for public access to all gardens by
providing a uniform framework that will allow for
flexibility in management within each garden on
Austin’s Parks and Recreation property.
