Playgrounds

The Austin Parks and Recreations Department oversees 89 composite playground sites with playscapes for 2-5 and/or 5-12 age use, and 5 sites with swing sets only. In addition there are 16 playgrounds for public use shared with Austin Independent School District. The playgrounds are open for public use each day from 5am - 10pm unless otherwise posted. Exceptions for public time use may be for those sites shared with ASID or by the director of Parks and Recreation Department.

In order to make these resources easier to locate, the map (458kb PDF file) divides the City of Austin into four sections.
The sections include:
*Northeast (NE) parkland located north of Riverside Drive, east of Lamar Blvd. extending to the city limits.
*Northwest (NW) parkland located north of Cesar Chavez, west of Lamar, extending to the city limits
*Town Lake (TL) parkland located between Cesar Chavez and Riverside, east of Pleasant Valley, west of Lamar to city limits
* South (S) parkland located South of Riverside Drive, extending to the city limits, excluding the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

Playground Safety Program

Introduction
Playgrounds are a fundamental part of the childhood experience and an important part of a Childs development, that should be provided hazard free and in a safe environment.

This Program insures that an on going process is in place to meet the needs of the community following the standards of the American Society Testing Materials and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

This Document provides a process for the department to conduct inspections, audits, and maintenance of the playground system.

The Playground Safety Program is designed to bring all Playgrounds and Play Equipment into compliance with the American Society Testing Materials (ASTM) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) guidelines, and State Law, TX Health & Sec.756.061, Ch. 896 (H.B. 632), PLAYGROUNDS-PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT STANDARDS-PUBLIC FUNDS.
    Goals - In order to Protect Austin’s investment in recreational land water and facilities the department will ensure:
  • 90% of the maintenance work is completed within allotted time. In order to increase the efficiency of the administrative services, the department will:
  • Meet 100% of its reporting deadlines. To promote a safer playground system, the department will manage the level of unsafe active by ensuring:
  • There is no unsafe play equipment, playgrounds, and play surfaces within the playground system. To provide a safe challenging play environment for the community by:
  • Maintaining and constructing playgrounds and equipment that meets the current standards. Vision In order to accomplish this mission the program must be able to identify a safe challenging play environment by:
  • Understanding of the current standard of care that effects the playground environment.
  • Identify non-compliant playground safety concerns.
  • Rank these non-compliant concerns as to their likelihood of causing a playground accident.
  • Prioritize the concerns found within the playground environment to help create an action plan for the elimination of these non-compliant concerns.
  • Share their knowledge on the public use playground standard of care with other people involved in playground operations within their agency and throughout their community.
