Frequently Asked Questions
How wet does the pile need to be?
The pile should be damp like a wrung out sponge, neither still dripping nor dry.
My compost has a bad odor- what should I do? Turn the pile. It needs air.
What if the center of my compost pile is dry and white mold is growing there? Your compost needs water- moisten the pile and turn it.
What if the center of my pile is damp, but dry everywhere else? Your pile is either too small or too dry. Either collect more material, or moisten your heap.
What if the heap is sweet-smelling, but will not heat up? Try mixing in a nitrogen source (green material).
What do I do with extra grass clippings and leaves that I can't fit in my pile? Use extra grass clippings and leaves as mulch around planting. See our Mulching, Grasscycling info >
What do I do with tree limbs, small brush, or woody waste?
Leave for your designated yard trimming pickup day.
