Trash Generated By A Move

Corrugated Cardboard Boxes (Except Pizza Boxes)

Ask your moving company if they would like the boxes back for reuse. If not, you can recycle corrugated cardboard boxes at the curb. The boxes must be flattened to 2 feet by 2 feet and tied into manageable bundles with string or twine. This allows the recycling crew to pick them up and fit them in the truck. If you prefer, you can also drop off corrugated cardboard at Ecology Action for recycling.

There is no limit to the number of corrugated cardboard boxes you set out, as long as they're prepared according to the instructions above. Pizza boxes should be put in your garbage cart.

U-Haul Stores have a new Box Exchange Program. Whether you need moving boxes or you want to share your used but perfectly good moving boxes, check with U-Haul- both online and in-store.

Packing Peanuts

Packing peanuts cannot be recycled, but the UPS Store, and other mailing companies frequently accept packing peanuts for reuse.

If you can't give the packing peanuts away, please seal them in a plastic bag before putting them in your garbage cart. This will prevent them from spilling out and littering your street when the garbage cart is emptied.

Newsprint

Newsprint can be recycled with other paper products at the curb as long as it isn't yellowed. If the newsprint has become yellow from age or from getting wet, please put it in your garbage cart.

Bubblewrap

Bubblewrap cannot be recycled. Please put it in your garbage cart.

Large Pieces of Styrofoam

Styrofoam cannot be recycled. Put it in your garbage cart. If the pieces are too large to fit in your garbage cart, please break them down so that they do fit.

Extra Garbage

Garbage that doesn't fit in your garbage cart, when the lid is closed, is considered extra garbage and must be paid for separately.

Paints, Cleaning Products and Other Chemicals

If the previous owner has left chemicals such as paint, leftover cleaning products, lawn care products, etc., in your new home, you should bring them free of charge to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for safe disposal. No more than 30 gallons per household. Residents of Austin and Travis County only.
