All-in-One Recycling Pilot
Improvements are coming to the City of Austin's recycling program. In January 2005, Solid Waste Services completed the "All-in-One" (also known as Single Stream) recycling pilot. The pilot tested picking up recycling every other week from 60 gallon carts similar to garbage carts. The pilot was a tremendous success. At the request of participants, the program will continue in the pilot neighborhoods while Solid Waste Services plans for citywide implementation.

The Pilot Program At A Glance
- All recycling goes in a grey 60 gallon cart with a blue lid. Additional recycling carts available upon request.
- Recycling collection will be every other week on the same day as it is now.
- Boxboard, such as cereal and shoe boxes, can also be recycled during the pilot.
- No change to garbage or yard trimmings collection.
All-In-One Program Guidelines
These guidelines apply to households participating in the recycling pilot:
- Place your recycling at the curb by 6:30 a.m.
- Leave about five feet of space between your recycling, your garbage and your yard trimmings.
- Rinse food containers before recycling them.
- Place plastic bottles #1 and #2, glass bottles and jars, and metal cans directly in your recycling cart. Do not bag them.
- We recommend placing newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office paper and boxboard (such as cereal and shoe boxes) in paper bags before placing them in your recycling cart.
- You can recycle corrugated cardboard by breaking it down so it fits loosely in your recycling cart or you can flatten it, fold it to less than 2 feet by 2 feet, tie it into bundles and place the bundles beside your recycling cart.
- All your recycling, except corrugated cardboard, must fit loosely inside your recycling cart.
- Only place the following items in your recycling cart: Plastic bottles (#1 and #2), glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, steel/tin cans, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office paper, boxboard (such as cereal and shoe boxes) and corrugated cardboard.
