Recycling or Waste Reduction?
Or both? Participating in recycling is an important aspect of running a sustainable company. It can also make good business sense. Done right, recycling sometimes pays for itself and more.
But there’s something even better than recycling, both in terms of the environment and economics: Waste Reduction. Waste Reduction is the practice of generating less waste in the first place. If you aren’t in a position to offer recycling, you can almost certainly afford to implement some waste reduction strategies.
Before you buy an item, or use and discard one, ask yourself:
REDUCE: Can I buy this product with less packaging?
REUSE: Can I or someone else use this again?
RECYCLE: Can I recycle this after I use it?
BUY RECYCLED: Can I get this item with recycled content?
Free Assistance Implementing a Program
Implementing a recycling or waste reduction program depends on your company’s size, type and location. For example, if you lease office space in a large, multi-tenant building, you will work with the building’s property management company who may be responsible for implementing the building’s recycling program. Businesses located in a free-standing structure may implement their own recycling and waste reduction program.
Staff in the Waste Reduction Assistance Program conduct free waste assessments to provide you with hands-on assistance specific to your business and situation. Our consultants help you with recycling, waste reduction and buying environmentally preferable products. This service is voluntary, confidential and free of charge.
